When I start a new project without a real plan this one is always on my mind: “what’s the worst that can happen?” The answer is: nothing bad. You could lose time because you need to undo stuff. But there are no lives at risk because you just go ahead and try something out. No one is going to suffer because of it (ok, maybe you will, but no one else).

Design Process: from idea to pattern (the chaotic version)

Sometimes when I talk to Sarah and Katharina about their design process, I feel really bad… They tend to think things through and actually do the math on it beforehand. I on the other hand mostly just swing it…

When I start there are mostly pictures in my head (no math anywhere to be seen). So when I started on my corner to corner shrug I didn’t know what exactly it would be just that I wanted some kind of shrug and that I really wanted to try it out. I will take you along for the ride and tell you how I started getting to the pattern in the end.

Design Process: Inspiration

Where do I find inspiration to design knitwear?

It may depend on personal preferences, some may find it easy to decide on a design just from their “inside” world, from what’s going on in their mind. Some need more Inspiration from the “outside” world.

There is no right or wrong, there is no better way, there is just YOUR way of doing it. So don’t think less of you, just because one specific way isn’t working for you. Try another, try different ways, until you find that path that is yours! You will find it. If you want to design your own knitwear – believe in yourself. If you can’t, I will do it for you: I believe in you and will help you to get there.
